The Gawler South WWI Memorial is located near the Adelaide Road/Nineteenth Street roundabout. Erected by the Gawler South and Gawler Blocks community, it was unveiled on 24th September 1921, in front of a crowd of around 2000 people.

As the Bunyip (30 Sep 1921) at the time reported - the memorial is made completely of Angaston marble and stands 17 feet high [5+ meters], consisting of "a rugged base" from which arises an "oblong stone on which are engraved the names of 164 soldiers who enlisted from Gawler South and Gawler Blocks. On another face appear the names of those soldiers who made the Great Sacrifice, twenty-seven well known young men", it is "surmounted by a life-sized figure of an Australian soldier in full accoutrement."[1] "It is surrounded by an iron railing fence, being portion of the Wilcox gift fence to the town inside the enclosure the wheels buried in concrete is the war trophy, a field piece captured by the 12 th Brigade. The enclosure is fully concreted and coloured the base of the monument being finished off in concrete with raised crosses on all sides."[1]

There has been much discussion over the years about whether the memorial should be moved to another position within Gawler.
