The Gawler South WWI Memorial is located near the Adelaide Road/Nineteenth Street roundabout. Erected by the Gawler South and Gawler Blocks community, it was unveiled on 24th September 1921, in front of a crowd of around 2000 people. The memorial is made completely of Angaston marble and stands 17 feet high [5+ meters], consisting of "a rugged base" from which arises an "oblong stone on which are engraved the names of 164 soldiers who enlisted from Gawler South and Gawler Blocks. On another face appear the names of those soldiers who made the Great Sacrifice, twenty-seven well known young men", it is "surmounted by a life-sized figure of an Australian soldier in full accoutrement."[1] Please <click here> to read the full Bunyip Newspaper report from 30 September 1921 regarding the Gawler South War Memorial (provided by the National Trust Gawler Branch Volunteers).
There has been much discussion over the years about whether the memorial should be moved to another position within Gawler.
