Hugh Ernest Gordon and his family were the first to live in Lot 38 Express Street (now 9 Fourteenth Street), moving to Gawler from the Port Adelaide area. When they moved in in 1904, Hugh and wife Ellen ‘Nellie’ (nee Crossman) would have been in their early forties. Their family consisted of son, Edward (6) and daughter, Eva (3), their first two daughters having died in infancy before the family moved to Gawler. It is likely their nephew, Leslie ‘Les’ Blair (15), also lived with them, the family having adopted him after the death of his mother (Nellie’s sister) when he was three.
During his time at Lot 38, Hugh opened “H. E. Gordon The General’s Ham Shop”, a delicatessen and private refreshment room in Murray Street, Gawler (near Lyndoch Road). The shop was a success and ran for many years, even surviving the depression, which many businesses did not.
The success of their business enabled the Gordon family to move from Lot 38 to their own home; ‘Dongara’ at 10 Daly Street, Gawler East, where they lived out the rest of their lives. Son, Edward, died in 1920, aged just 21 years and 10 months, followed by his mother ‘Nellie’ in 1924, aged 62. Daughter, Eva, remained unmarried and cared her father, who died in 1937, aged 75, following a lingering illness of about twelve months. The family left no descendants.
The families adopted son Les moved to Western Australia, where he was working as an engineer, when he enlisted to serve in WWI. He survived the war, returning to WA, where he spent the rest of his life.
