Mr. Hamilton was a native of the Gawler district, being born at Mt. Crawford. His father was a stud master for Mr. A.J.Murray, and his knowledge of merinos caused him to be recognised as one of Australia's sheep experts.
Jos Hamilton gained his knowledge of the clothing and mercery trade through R.J.Lavis who owned a store known as Pile's Buildings. In 1901 Mr.Hamilton went to Western Australia where he managed a shipping and chandler's agency at Fremantle. In 1904 he returned to Gawler and took up as assistant to Mr.A.H.Harris in the "Modern Store". He later became a traveller for F.D.Temby in the tailoring line.In 1913, Mr. Hamilton, with a Mr. Virgin, took over Mr. Temby's business. After three years the partnership dissolved and Mr. Hamilton assumed sole control. Under auction, he bought the full block of buildings, retaining the "Corner Store" for his own requirements and re-sold the other premises to others. All the shops were re-modelled after purchase. Mr. Hamilton then had a ladies lingerie business, under the charge of Miss Llewellyn, together with his men's and boys' department store.
