Thomas James was born at Gawler in 1862, the fourth child of Onesipherus Hayles and Johanna nee Kettle. The witnesses at his baptism on 24th August 1862 were Michael O’Dea and Eliza Schmidt. Tom married his sweetheart, Ellen Poyner on 30 June 1886 at the residence of G E Hertoy, Atholstone. Ellen Elizabeth Poyner was born to parents Alfred George Poyner and Ann nee Foster on 1 June 1863, Golden Grove.
Thomas and Ellen were blessed with three sons and two daughters – Edith Nellie (b.19 July 1887 Atholstone), Ruby May (b. 20 September 1889 Yattalunga), Thomas Leslie (b. 6 March 1892 Gawler Hills), Hedley Roy (b. 26 February 1899 Yattalunga) and Wilfred Stanley (b. 9 February 1901 Gawler South).
When Thomas’ father retired into the township of Gawler, Thomas offered to buy his father’s farm, but his father had not made a success of farming and he apparently didn’t want his son to succeed on the farm that he had worked; so the story claims. The property was sold to the owners of “Yattalunga” station where Thomas worked until he could buy his own farm (section 3197 Hundred of Munno Para) on Main North & Hayles Roads, Smithfield in 1908. With help from his son Roy, he worked the farm until 1926 when he retired and went to live in Gawler South, the owner of allotments 208,209,210,& 211 on which he resided at 42 Second Street on allotment 208 until his death on 3rd March 1940, his wife Ellen having sadly died on the 10th July 1921 at the age of 57 years. They are both buried in the Willaston Cemetery.
Roy purchased his father’s farm as well as other sections of land and continued to work there until his retirement. He sold out and took up residence at 9 Barnet Road, Evanston. Son Thomas took over his father’s position at Yattalunga station. Wilfred a Mercantile Clerk at Balaklava, he never married. Edith Nellie married Charles Thomas Englert Ruby May married Henry Carroll.
The house occupied by Thomas J Hayles at 42 Second Street, Gawler South remained in the Hayles family until 1965. On the 5 July 1990 a Strata Title was issued by the Lands Titles Office and there are 8 units thereon.
