Hewett Primary School was established to serve the growing community on the northern edge of a growing Gawler , and is co-located with the Elsie Ey Children's Centre and shares the Hewett Community Centre. The school serves a diverse population, including many families from the Defence Force. In its early days, the school followed a traditional curriculum. Today, it is focused on providing an inclusive learning environment and has a Disability Unit on-site to support students with severe and multiple disabilities.

Hewett , a Northern suburb of the Gawler region, was established as a region in April 2001 , with its development including the Harkness Heights and McKinlay Estate. The suburb's development is tied to the history of the surrounding Gawler area, a significant regional settlement in early South Australia. The name "Hewett" itself has earlier historical roots in the state, linked to Charles Thomas Hewett, a settler who arrived in 1839, and a local butcher family who had a presence in Gawler.
