A TRINITY MAN Michael Hewitson is currently the Mayor of Unley (2024) but his part in establishing Trinity College was a significant contribution to the town of Gawler. The first head master and CEO of Trinity College, Michael was there from when the school first started at Evanston in 1985, until his retirement in 2002. Trinity College opened in February 1984 at Church Hill with 27 students. The teachers were Tina and Peter Hatchett, assisted by part time staff including a secretary, librarian, teacher's aide and a music teacher. During that first year, the student numbers grew to 38. A classroom block and a house were built and Trinity College was moved to its current location at Evanston Park. During the construction, Michael Hewitson was busy seeking new enrolments, as well as some government funding and staff. Michael and his family moved into the new ‘log cabin’ residence, even before power and water were connected. And then the growth continued, with over 4000 students at four campuses currently. In 1998 Michael was recognised as a Fellow of the Australian College of Education and, in January 2013, was made a Member of the Order of Australia, “for significant service to education, to the Anglican Church in Australia, and to the community of Unley”. An Adelaide University graduate as a microbiologist with honours, Michael was also a Pilot Officer with the RAAF. As an educator, he taught maths and sciences in state and independent schools across South Australia. From 1975 he was appointed as the director of the Salisbury Education Centre where he was involved in teacher training and development and the wider community, which included the establishment of Radio Station 5PBA. After his time at Trinity, Michael moved to Unley, where he was a councillor in the council for 12 years before becoming mayor in 2018.
