Elizabeth Gwyne Hudman (nee Lavis)

I was born in Gawler on 22nd March, 1939 and as a child lived at 31 Blanche Street, Gawler East.

My first school was the Gawler Primary School on Nixon Terrace and then on to Gawler High School which was located at that time on Lyndoch Road.

I met Eric Hudman in 1958, Eric was on holidays from New Guinea, we married in 1959 and we spent several years in Port Moresby. Our son Marc was born there. We returned to Adelaide in 1964 our daughter Tonia was born in here. We have two grandsons Corey and Sam.

My working life has been interesting, firstly in New Guinea where I worked for Qantas, the South Pacific Post Newspaper and Coopers and Lybrand Chartered Accountants. When we returned to Adelaide I continued to work for various Chartered Accountants before being made Licensee/Director/Manager of a hotel in the snowfields of Victoria. We moved to Queensland, where I worked primarily with Intellectually Disabled young people, then to Tasmania and finally back to Gawler. Since being back in South Australia I have been Coordinator of a Dementia Respite Facility, Trainer & Assessor of Mental Health, Disability and Aged Care, and now Coordinator of Gawler Care & Share Group Inc.

Eric and I have travelled to England, China, Italy, and Asia, however, Gawler is home and I have many special memories of growing up in Gawler. The old Smithy at the Coles Complex, I chewed his ear daily as a child on my way to school, played truant in Pioneer Park amongst the gravestones (that was big brother Norm’s idea).
