HUMPHRYS HORACE GEORGE
Born in Gawler in 1898, Horace was brought up on the family farm and went to work as an electrical engineer for Mr. Sidney Bertram Withers, who had his garage in Murray Street.
Horace was a teacher at the Gawler Technical School on Lyndoch Road in the 1920’s.
He left the employ of Mr. Withers in 1939 to return to the family farm [of 200 acres] for a few years. [The farm was west of Gawler near the first big bend of the Gawler to Roseworthy College road].
Horace then established an electrical business in the Pile Building [corner of Murray and Finniss streets]. He then shifted the business to the eastern side of Murray Street; 2 doors south of Lyndoch Road.
At a later date, he bought out the business of Mr. Cliff Frederick Eyers. In one side of the shop he ran his electrical business and on the other side of the shop was his wife’s stationery business.
In 1948, John A. Hillier joined the business and they formed a Private Company in 1952.
Mr Humphrys died on 17th June 1964 at the age of 66.
John Hillier carried on the business for Mrs Humphrys and John eventually took over the business until his death on 19th January 1982, at the age of 48.
John’s wife Janet carried on the business with the assistance of a Manager and others.
By 1991 [when these notes were compiled] the business was still carried on under the name of HG
Humphrys P/L.

We thank Janet Hillier for the following information
plus the photos she has shared of H.G. Humphrys.
“George was the only child of George Humphrys, who had a shop in 18th Street Gawler South.
Horace George Humphrys married Mora Toll and they had no children. He was a very quiet man [serious mostly] and he always wore a grey “dust coat” to work.
He was a Lay Preacher in the Methodist Church and attended Kangaroo Flat Church then Gawler West. He donated an organ in the Gawler West Church.
He always drove cars he purchased from Withers Garage [“Javelins” mostly] and then lastly Humber Super Snipes. When he and Mora drove to Adelaide, they would always stop on their way and have a cup of tea out of their thermos.
A memorial window to honour H.G. Humphrys is in the Tod Street [Methodist] Uniting Church.”
