Mr. Thomas Hutchinson was the founder of the Hutchinson Hospital, on East Terrace. Mr. Hutchinson had been a resident of the town for over 50 years, serving as Town Inspector and later as a Gawler Councillor, representing East Ward in 1881 and South Ward 1884 to 1887.

The funds, approximately, ten thousand pounds, became available on the death of his wife in 1911. The family home in High Street was sold to provide the funds.

Thomas Hutchinson appeared to own 4 houses [joined together]on Reid Street [north of the Accountant's house on the corner of Jacob Street] and now forming the southern end of the car-park south of Baker Reserve; according to Helen Wilmore.
