John Letcher was born at Moonta Mines, South Australia on the June 25, 1872 to parents, James and Catherine Letcher nee Brenton.

John married in 1895 at Moonta Mines to Miss Madeline Nobis.

After having completed his pharmacy course he was employed by Bickford and sons for several years and then acted as manager for a number of pharmaceutical-chemists before buying a business at Peterborough where he was a member of the Great Northern (Peterborough) Freemasons’ Lodge, serving as secretary for five years. He was also secretary of the Peterborough Tennis Club for seven years. There daughter’s Vida and Marjorie were born at Peterborough.

John Letcher removed to Gawler in 1906 and secured a business as chemist and druggist at 95 Murray Street. Part allotment 198 and part section 4, High Street, Gawler East from Mr S H McMillan.

Howard John Letcher, son of John was born 1909 at Gawler also became a chemist.

John Letcher was a member of the Tod Street Methodist Church and on the board of Trustees. He was elected councillor of East Ward, Gawler in 1912. John and his daughters, Vida and Marjorie were active members of the Gawler Methodist Tennis Club. In 1923 Miss Vida Letcher was the Vice-president of the Gawler High School Old Scholars Association.

Letcher’s Chemist was a booking agent for local entertainment and advertised regularly in the “Bunyip”. The Gawler South Pictures and Central Pictures plus other amusements were open for booking.

Reported in the “Bunyip” in July 1918 – Mr John Letcher purchased a Dodge Brothers motor car fitted with an Australian built streamline body, by messrs Holden and Frost, Adelaide, from Gawler and District agent May Bros & Co Ltd.

In 1923, as advertised, Sale of Superior Furniture by Matthews & Co, auctioneers, on-account-of Mr J Letcher, who has sold his chemist business in Murray Street, Gawler to Mr Roy Boswell Pearson, as he has purchased a business at Parkside.

His daughter Marjorie married Ronald Phillip Cheek, son of Arthur Forgie Cheek, at Kent Town in 1922.

John Letcher died November 7, 1942 having served the community of Parkside in business as a pharmaceutical-chemist and a senior circuit steward of the Methodist Church, Young Street, Parkside East for nearly twenty years.
