I was born on Australia Day 1945 in Adelaide and grew up in Mitcham. My mum, Jean Webb (nee Williams) met my dad, William Martin Webb, during the Second World War when he was a gunner in the Royal Australian Navy. After completing my schooling at Unley Girls Technical High School, I trained at the RAH to become a registered nurse in 1966. I completed my midwifery course at the Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital in 1967, the same year I married Tom Mann after a whirlwind courtship. We moved to Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1974 with our two daughters, Rachel and Linda, and enjoyed a community life with other young mothers on the campus while our children attended Roseworthy Primary School. I joined the student hockey team with the first intake of female students at the College. And we won the premiership!
I was a relief receptionist in Dr Deland and Dr Harbison’s clinic for a number of years before starting as a registered nurse at Martindale Nursing Home, where I continued to work for 17 years. I loved working with the elderly. At times I also worked at the ‘old’ Hutchinson Hospital.
I remember the early 1970s when Gawler was a much smaller country town and the old-time shops were still functioning as were the regular weekly markets. Where the Coles complex is now situated, farmers would bring in their crates of produce and squawking chooks and ducks, and other livestock. The horse sales were also conducted amidst all the noise, dust and bustle of activity.
We have seen many changes to the town since our move to Gawler in 1988. It is now a rapidly growing area where we can enjoy the mix of old and new.
