THE LATE MRS. JAMES MARTIN.
FUNERAL AT GAWLER.
Owing to the death of Mrs. Martin, which occurred on Wednesday at her residence, Trevu, near Gawler, the deepest sympathy has been felt for the Hon. James Martin, and this was shown by the number of his friends who flocked into the town from all quarters to attend the funeral on Friday.
Mrs. Martin was 75 years of age, and for several years had been afflicted with blindness. Several efforts had been made to restore her sight but with-out success. Mrs. Martin was the oldest in-habitant but one of Gawler, having taken up her residence in the town half a century ago, with her husband, Mr David Vickerstaff, who was a successful contractor, one of his works being the construction of the earth-works on the Port Adelaide railway. He acquired a large amount of property and built the Gawler Arms Hotel. Mr. Vickerstaff died in 1855 at the age of 40 years, and his widow went on a trip to Europe.
On returning she married Mr. Martin in 1858, this being the third time that the hon. member had been wedded. Mrs. Martin left no children. She was most popular throughout the district, and by her many kind and philanthropic actions had endeared herself to many.
An evidence of this was that the funeral cortege yesterday was one of the largest—if not the largest—ever seen in the town. The procession left Mr. Martin's residence at half-past 2 o'clock and wended its way to the Willaston cemetery. In front marched about 250 employees of the firm of Messrs. Martin and Co.; then came the hearse, the mourning carriages, members of the Legislature, and the general public. Canon Coombs conducted the burial service.
Amongst those around the grave were — The Hon. James Martin, Messrs. T. Gill (stepson), J. H. Martin, W. J. Martin, Walter Martin, W. F. Martin, Masters J. McN. Martin, A. A. Martin, J. J.
