Well-known horsing identity, Mr William Roy Martin of North Para, Gawler died on May 11, 1982. Mr Martin, whose family links with Gawler go back to his grand-parents John and Jane Martin nee Hearle and great uncle James Martin, had been associated with horse events and breeding all his life in many ways. Son of the late William James Martin and Ada Adelaide Martin nee Long, he continued farming pursuits on the Martin property at North Para, near Gawler.
Mr Martin was born on 5 June 1900 at Gawler.
His father was well-known for the breeding of his show horses and exhibits.
With his identical twin brother, Max, of Gawler, he served for twenty years in the local Light Horse Militia outfit and was associated with the Gawler Trotting Club for 40 years, the Barossa Valley Racing Club for 22 years and had been a member of the Gawler Show Society since 1918.
Mr Martin's elder brother Stuart, now 92, was well known in equestrian events and a most successful rider.
Stuart's son, Jim Martin, is clerk-of-the-course at Adelaide races as well as being starter at Gawler and Kapunda trotting meetings.
President of the Gawler Trotting Club, Mr C A Cockshell, in paying tribute, said that Mr Martin was the barrier attendant who operated at the inaugural meeting of the Gawler Trotting Club in 1938 and continued in that position until his retirement in 1980.
Mr Martin’s delight was that one of the men to replace him upon his retirement was his grandson, Peter Bain.
Mr Martin, whose wife predeceased him, is survived by his only child Valerie, her husband Trevor Bain and their two children Peter and Janet.
