McLEAN James Sparshott

Mr James Sparshott McLean was born at Gawler River on the 5 April 1873 to parents Alexander McLean and Sarah Ann nee Sparshott. He was educated at Mr. L S Burton’s private school, Gawler and had also been a pupil at Roseworthy College and afterwards at the Victorian Veterinary College. Devoting his life to veterinary science, he obtained the highest honours in both institutions.

Mr McLean married Miss Joyce Ethel Bright at the residence of the bride’s mother, 29 September 1893. There were three children – Annie Joyce (Mrs. John Edwin Champion RENNOLDS) born 9 February 1894 at Gawler; Walter James born 15 April 1895 at Gawler married Merna EYERS and George Albert William born 5 August 1896 at Gawler married Hilda Sophie ROGERS.

That piece of land – part allotment 33 - Jacob Street was transferred to James Sparshott McLean on 17 January 1896, Volume 75 Folio 86. Mr McLean was a most useful member of the community, serving in many capacities. Beginning his public life as a councillor in Mudla Wirra South, he later served different terms as a councilor in the Gawler municipality. He at one time was a committeeman of the Gawler Jockey Club and was patron and president of various athletic bodies. Church work also received his close attention. Perhaps his greatest interest lay in the welfare of Rechabitism, and Mr McLean held many responsible positions in connection with the order. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Gawler Poultry and Kennel Society, staging a most successful initial show.

Mr James S McLean died at a Rechabite tent meeting in a clubroom of the Gawler Institute on the evening of the 22 November 1928. He attended a gathering of the female members and was taking their subscriptions when he fell forward and had already taken his final breath. He was laid to rest in the St George’s Anglican Cemetery, Gawler East.
