Moving to Gawler as a youngster, Sonny made a name for himself on the football field at Gawler Central before starting in Central District’s first league team at Elizabeth in 1964.
Part of the Stolen Generations, Sonny was born at Yambah near Alice Springs before being transferred to Adelaide. An indigenous Arrernte man, Sonny carved out an impressive life for himself, as a footballer, public servant, and his work with the police.
For Central District, Sonny was the first player to get a kick in the club’s first game, was the first ‘Bulldog’ to play 200 league games, represented the state and in 1972 was runner-up to Malcolm Blight for the Magarey Medal. He also was a successful coach for Eudunda and also took Central District to the 1985 under 17 premiership.
In 2020 his story was told in the book ‘Sonny’, which was supported by the then state premier Stephen Marshall and co-written by former Bulldog teammate Robin Mulholland. Last season Sonny was the AFL’s ambassador for its indigenous round, which was a high honour, while he also is in the SANFL Hall of Fame and gained selection in Central District Football Club’s inaugural Hall of Fame last year.
