Emmanuel Johannes Noack, known as Jack, was born in 1894, son of August Noack and brother of Wilhelm Daniel Noack. In 1916 he married Ida Auguste Weichert; the couple had at least 2 sons, Oswald Gerald and Ivan, and one daughter, Dawn (there is a photo of Ivan and Dawn in front of the Crosby’s Float in 1939). Son Oswald Gerald Noack served in the RAAF in WWII (see WWII Personnel).
E J Noack ran a carrier service between Gawler and Adelaide for 25 years, from 1923 until 1948, when he sold his business to competitor Mr H T Bennett.[1] His time behind the wheel was not without incident. In 1930 he was fined £2 with £1 costs, for driving his motor lorry with trailer at 30-33 mph when the legal speed was 15 mph.[2] Then in 1933 when transporting a load of beer casks along Main North Road at Thorngate, he had to serve sharply to avoid a motor car, causing several casks to roll off the lorry, spill beer over the road and knock down part of a fence[3] - that was on the 30th December, so perhaps one of Gawler’s pubs was a bit short for New Year’s Eve celebrations! Worst came in 1937, he was driving his lorry across the Frome Road Bridge in Adelaide and had his elbow resting out the window when he collided with a truck travelling in the other direction. He was rushed to Adelaide Hospital where surgeons rebuilt the elbow from fragments, and the following day he was reported to be “remarkably bright and cheerful”, stating “Even if it is going to be stiff, I realise how lucky I am still to have the arm at all,"[4]
In 1929 his depot was somewhere in Tod Street, by 1938 he had relocated it to 50 Murray Street, which also served as the family’s residence[5] and as a distribution site for motor oil and petrol.
Emmanuel Johannes passed away on 8 Jan 1967, aged 72 and was buried in Willaston Cemetery. Wife Ida survived him by 20 years and is buried with him.
