Mr John Parker Pearson, who died recently at Gawler, was born at Grantham, Lincolnshire on February 22, 1857, and was the eldest son of Mr Joseph Pearson of that town.
After attending the parish school he at an early age entered the office of the well-known engineers, Hornsby and Sons. A few years later he was apprenticed to the firm, and entered the pattern shop, at the same time improving his knowledge by attending the night schools which were established at that time for apprentices at the works. After completion of his apprenticeship he and his brother went to America in 1879 and for two years worked for the firm of Marmon Nordyke, of Cincinnatti. Tiring of America, Mr Pearson returned to England, and was again employed by Hornsby and Sons. About that time Messrs Martin & Co, of Gawler, were making enquiries for experienced men, and Mr Pearson came out in 1883 under engagement to the firm. He remained with Martin’s for many years.
After the death of Mr Sam Layton, he was appointed foreman of the pattern shop. Later he also had the oversight of the moulding shop. About two years ago Mr Pearson resigned, owing to failing health, and a presentation was made by the firm (now Perry & Co) in recognition of his faithful service of 40 years.
Mr Pearson, thinking the trip would benefit his health, went last year with his wife to England, and visited the scenes of his boyhood. On his return last November, however, it was seen that his health had rapidly given way, and he never recovered. In connection with the Methodist Church in Gawler, he held practically all the important posts. He was for 12 years superintendent of the Willaston Methodist Sunday-school, and also held a similar position at the Tod-street school. He was of retiring nature, and did not enter public life, but after his day’s work found recreation in the garden.
He was always willing to give a helping hand to those who needed it. He was an Oddfellow, and the oldest member in Gawler of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers. He married Miss Adelaide Jones, the only daughter of Mr James Jones, of Gawler, He left a widow and one son, Mr R B Pearson, chemist, of Gawler. 1
