This impressive building was designed by leading colonial architect Thomas English, to house the Gawler Branch of the "Bank of South Australia", and built by contractor Henry Brown in 1859.[1] It is of Italianate style featuring a stucco finish, stone quoins, a semi-circular arch entrance flanked by neo-Grecian columns and single and double arch windows with keystones and shutters. The original bank vault featured a large water tank under the floor to discourage underground break-ins. The front fence has a rendered wall and pillars with iron palisades.

Two years prior to the construction of the building, on 14 July 1857, the Bank of South Australia commenced operating a branch in Gawler, under the management of Mr Alexander Grace.[2] They were the first bank to operate a branch in Gawler, with George Fife Angas holding the first account. (Note this "Bank of South Australia" is a disconnected business from BankSA, which was also know as the "Bank of South Australia" at one time).[3][4]

In 1892 the property was transferred to the Union Bank of Australia, as part of their takeover of the Bank of South Australia.[5]

In 1930 the property was purchased by Kathleen Clara Rudall, wife of Reginald Rudall, and became the offices of Rudall & Rudall Lawyers.[5]
