Dr Otto Alfred Carl Schomburgk (c. 1809 – 16 August 1857)

  • Otto Alfred Carl Schomburgk was born around 1809/1810 at Freyburg Saxony, Germany. He was a member of the prominent Schomburgk family; his father was Rev. Johann Friedrich Ludwig Schomburgk, a Lutheran clergyman, Otto emigrated to South Australia in 1849 with his wife Maria Charlotte Schomburgk (née von Selchow), arriving aboard the Princess Louise.
  • Together with his brother Richard (Moritz Richard Schomburgk), Otto helped establish a farm, orchard and vineyard near Buchsfelde, on the Gawler River, West of Gawler township.
  • Otto served the local community in many roles — He was the first President of the Gawler Agricultural Horticultural and Floricultural Society 1854- 1856. evidence suggests he was active as a physician, veterinarian, midwife, justice of the peace, local government councillor and pastor in the German-Australian settlement around Buchsfelde.
    • He helped found and support the Süd-Australische Zeitung, a German-language newspaper, alongside other German emigrants.
    • Otto was the pastor of the Lutheran congregation in Buchsfelde until his death. The church he served is documented in local histories of German-Lutheran communities in the Gawler and Two Wells districts.

Otto Alfred was the older brother of Moritz Richard Schomburgk (usually called Richard), who became a prominent botanist and Director of the Adelaide Botanic Garde
