The fifth Sustainable Living Festival was held in Gawler on Sunday 12 November 2017 at Pioneer Park. This was the first year that the Festival had been held at Pioneer Park, since being moved from its previous venue at 8 Adelaide Road, Gawler South. Although the weather on the day was over 35 degrees Celsius, the Festival had its biggest turn out, reaching 1,800 people. The Festival showcased over 30 businesses and organisations who sell products and services which align with the environmental themes of the event.

The day started with a Welcome to Country and was followed by guest speakers, workshops and live entertainment. Guest speakers covered topics such as food connections with Kerry Cleopatra, animals of the Mount Lofty Ranges with Professor Chris Daniels, sustainable building and renewable energy with Jason Gow and sustainable body decomposing with Abby Davis. Workshops included, textile jewellery making with Michelle Jahn, edible weeds with Malcolm Haines, creating fertile soil with Kim Syrus and composting with Georgia Pollard. Live music was provided by the G&T’s, Meryl and Josh Schiller, Cloudy Davey, James Kenny and Henry Barns-Tripp. Free activities included, yoga, giant games, plant propagation, face painting and kids activities. Food vendors offered sustainable meal options in compostable or reusable packaging.

The Un-Junk upcycled art competition and exhibition was popular with visitors. Over 40 weird and wonderful entries were received and exhibited on the day. Entries were submitted by childcare centres, schools and individuals and were created out of reused fabric, plastic bottles, paint, bottle tops, metal scraps, coffee pods, clothing tags, glass jars and more.

The Sustainable Living Festival is held in Gawler on the second Sunday in November each year and is organised by the Gawler Environment Centre (previously known as the Gawler Regional Natural Resource Centre Inc.).
