Edward Trott, his wife Mary Ann and their children relocated to Gawler from Port Pirie around 1912, Edward having been affected by lead poisoning whilst working at the Pirie smelters. He picked up some work on the Angaston railway and as a labourer at various Gawler firms, but by Apr 1912 he was declared insolvent as his labourer’s income was not enough to cover the ordinary living expenses of his wife and seven children.[1]

Three years and two extra children later, WWI was underway and Edward enlisted to serve in the army. He served for 3 years 7 days, including 2 years 274 days abroad, before receiving his discharge on the 28th June 1918, for family reasons.[2] In his application for discharge he cited his health had “broken down” whilst serving abroad, he had been reviewed by seven medical boards and classified P.B. [Permanent Base], he was 46 years old, had 9 children (7 under 16 years) and his eldest son [Malcolm Charles Trott] had married and left home in 1917, so his wife had no one to work the piece of land she was holding, which would help with the maintenance of the family.[2] [Note: the Gawler WWI Honour Board incorrectly has a star by Edward Trott’s name suggesting he died whilst serving.]

After the war, the family’s situation must have improved as in 1923 Mary Ann was able to purchase a large allotment of land at Redbanks Road, Willaston.[3] [Lot 25 Willaston – located on the south west corner of the Redbanks Road and Ayling Street intersection, extending all the way to Brown Street - it can be seen Frearson’s Map of Gawler c1870. In 1885 the lot had belonged to James Commons, farmer of Willaston; Mary Ann purchased it from the estate of Christiane Lucas.[3] The block has since been subdivided into 3 blocks and redeveloped 22 and 22A Redbanks Road and 2 Brown Street – no buildings remain from the time of the Trott family’s residence.]

The couple separated about 1926 and Edward was sentenced to 1 month in prison for failing to comply with court ordered maintenance payments to support his wife and two remaining dependent children[4] (this wasn’t the first time, back in 1907 the couple had separated temporarily and Edward was placed under court order for neglecting to provide reasonable maintenance for his wife and children).[5]

By 1927 Edward had permanently moved to Cheltenham.[6] The majority of the Trott children married and also moved away from the area. Sons ‘Jack’ John Ronald Trott and ‘Reg’ Reginald George Trott were both butchers and were working in Willaston in the 1930s, by 1941 Reg had relocated to Whyalla.[7] Youngest daughter Delcie Mavis Trott married another Willaston butcher, Ernest Benjamin Turner (brother of yet another Willaston butcher Spencer Turner!), the couple relocated to Woodside by 1943.

Mother Mary Ann Trott remained at Willaston until she died in 1955, aged 81 years. She is buried at Willaston Cemetery.

Prior to leaving the area, Reg Trott narrowly avoided a serious accident when the motorcycle he was riding collided with the leg of the camera tripod in the filming “One a Minute” by the “Gawler Metro Amateur Cine Club”.[8] In the scene, a car was being chased down King Street, Gawler, at more than 50 miles per hour and at the approach to the Willaston Bridge, two motorcycles, one ridden by Reg, were supposed to pass either side of the camera but Trott hit the camera tripod with the footrest of his bike.[8]
