Pastor at the Zion Lutheran Church Gawler 1995 – 2001
By the time that Pastor Tscharke was serving in Gawler, it was determined by the two congregations that each have their own Pastor. Pastor Tscharke served the Zion congregation.
Pastor Tscharke maintained a strong visiting program which included retired pastors regularly visiting aged persons.
With the blessing of the Zion congregation, Pastor Tscharke became involved in Industrial chaplaincy.
He also introduced “Hey, Hey, it’s Friday” as an alternative alongside Sunday School. Over time, his chaplaincy work was extended into the Gawler Police Station, Telstra, ETSA, SA Water, Inter-Trade and Industry Mission and the Department of Road Transport.
With the congregation flourishing, Pastor Clem Traeger, a retired pastor, was appointed part-time to the aged at home and in aged-care facilities.
Furthermore, Zion congregation called a second full-time pastor, with Geoff Havelberg commencing in that role in 2000 to work in partnership with Pastor Tscharke. That dual pastor arrangement continued for about 18 months when Pastor Tscharke resigned, leaving Pastor Havelberg the sole responsibility for the Zion congregation.
