Willaston Nursing Home

The house next door to the Willaston Post Office and general store was run by Sister Smith, as a Nursing Home. It is believed this was in the early 1900s. It is now a book shop.

Sister Smith was well regarded in the district. She was a member of the District Trained Nursing Society. The Gawler branch was established in 1896. The Bunyip spoke of her glowingly in the 10th March 1933 edition - “...nursing sisters have all been regarded as ministering angels and friends of the afflicted....taking figures supplied from last year – 2737 visits to 267 patients, who, without such comfort, would have had to leave their homes and enter hospital, either at Gawler or elsewhere...Sister Smith has been with the Gawler branch for over two years, and is universally loved for her skill and kindness manifested so ungrudgingly in homes in all parts of the district”.

Sister Smith went on to marry Mr. Tom Coombe who ran the Post Office and general store next door.
