Wood Charles and Harriet

Fast Facts
Type of person Family

According to Northamptonshire Parish Records, Charles [Snr] was baptized 10/6/1827 at All Saints Church in Northampton. His parents are Thomas and Hannah Wood. [FHL film Number 6128176] - maybe he altered his age to emigrate to South Australia as many did if their age didn't meet the criteria (and he was 49 when he died at the Gawler Railway Station so that age matches up with the birth date.) The photo of Charles Wood is Harriet and Charles's son.

Charles had an older brother Thomas, baptised 7/1/1823 at All Saints Church Northampton, who also came to South Australia with his wife Harriet Clayson. They had two children, one of which died at sea on the way here. Thomas had three marriages Marriage 1 - Harriet Clayson, Marriage 2 - Caroline Edkins (a widow) and Marriage 3 - Jane Bath. I believe they lived in Gawler for some time. Thomas was a Clerk somewhere in Gawler and his name was listed on Charles death details according to Digger BDM . I have no photos of Thomas (says Pat Guerin).

Charles Wood (Jnr) was born in Northampton, Northamptonshire England. He was baptised 11/12/1875. His parents were Thomas (Charles) Wood and Hannah Mallard. Charles had three brothers that we know of; Thomas, Joseph and Frederick. Thomas also came to South Australia and lived in Adelaide and some time in Gawler.

Charles married Harried Wood at the Church of St Sepulchre, Northampton 29th September 1861. The bride and groom were both of full age and their place of abode is listed as Mount Gardens, (which no longer exists). Charles occupation is Railway Porter. Harriet was born about 1840 in Northampton (daughter of Thomas Wood and mother unknown).

Charles and Harriet with son Charles arrive on the ‘Ocean Chief’ in 1864, (Mortlock Library advise that they all came together and there may have been a second child or just a mark on very fragile faded records) Family thought that there was only Charles Jnr. Harriet and Charles had another five children in Gawler.

At the Bassett Town Railway Station (where he worked) on December 1875 Charles met his untimely death after collapsing at the age of 49 years. He had been having heart problems but had been back at work for about three months when he became unwell. He is buried in the Willaston Cemetery - Section A Row M Plot 15. There is no headstone on the grave. Harriet at 35 years was left to bring up six children between the ages of two and thirteen years. She was known to be a gentle, caring and hard working lady.

On the 21st June 1878 Harriet Wood and Alexander Creyghton, both widowed, were married at the Baptist Manse in Gawler. They had two sons, Tom Alexander Creyghton and Joseph Wood Creyghton.

Tom died at the age of 26 years and Joseph married Edith Paternoster.

Harriet passed away at her home 23 Second St Gawler in March 1932 and is interred at the Willaston Cemetery. The headstone has her name on it also Tom Creyghton, her son, Charles Wood, her son, Elsie, her granddaughter aged 15yrs (daughter of Annie Wood), and Alexander Creyghton her 2nd husband.

Thank you to Patricia Guerin for this information.
