Spencer Turner (one of Natures Gentlemen). by Gerald Carmody

"Even though I knew him most of my life, I know surprisingly little about Spencer.

He was our family butcher, his shop being at Main North Road, Willaston, between Lally's Greengrocers and the Willaston Football Clubrooms (part of the Victoria Willaston Hotel Complex). With ten children we were probably his best customers!

He played football for the Donnybrooks and was also a Trainer. (See enclosed photo - Yours truly, with the football, was Acting Captain at the somewhat tender age of 16.) Spencer is the one without hat, standing at the right hand of the photo with coat and tie.

He was a great follower of Harness Racing (the 'Trots' as it was called then)

He was usually to be found with his good friend, Doug Cooper. As far as I know, Doug still lives in Gawler, but I "don't know where he are"."
