Frank Thomas Bunting was born in Staffordshire, England in 1873. He and older brother Jabez Bunting migrated to Australia, first joining their father in Victoria, then moving to South Australia in 1892, where they set up in partnership as Painters and Decorators.[1]
Frank had an eventful year in 1898; marrying Eva Sarah Long Busbridge (daughter of future Councillor and Mayor James Busbridge Jnr) in September, welcoming daughter Bernice Isabella Bunting in October, dissolving partnership with his brother and commencing business on his own. It isn’t certain where he was initially operating his business from, but in late 1899 he had “removed to more commodious premises” at Murray Street, opposite Lyndoch Road and the Forester’s Hall, which had been lately occupied by Mr O J Kamprod (seller of Drapery, Clothing and Millinery).[2][3] He did not remain at this site long; in mid-1900 relocating to the southern end of Murray Street, “opposite the Union Bank”.[4] By 1903, he advertised "coach painting a specialty" and boasted the "largest and most commodious workshops in Gawler".[5]
1902 saw Frank and wife Eva Sarah start up a new business venture, opening “Bunting & McCulloch”, a cordial and aerated water manufacturing business at Lot 2 Water Street, Gawler South[6] (this site now known as 32 Eighth street, was later used for the same purpose by Haydon and then Fotheringham). By October 1903 F T Bunting’s painting business had been taken over by Gibson & Werchon[7] and in January 1904 they closed the cordial business, auctioned the site and equipment and relocated to Goolwa.[8][9][10]
In 1910 the family moved back to Gawler, Frank resuming his painting business in the premises at the southern end of Murray Street. The Bunyip reported he aims at the ““truly artistic” in painting and paperhanging";[11] buildings he worked on in his time in Gawler included the Institute, the Town Hall and the Gawler South District Council Office.[12][13][14]
F T Bunting was still leasing the Murray Street premises (part Lot 6, contemporary address 14 Murray Street) in 1923 when they went up for auction following the death of owner James Sparshott.[15][16] (Click here for a photo of F T Bunting's shop – the building has since been demolished.) It is not certain if Frank remained living and working in Gawler at this time. By 1928 he was residing in Prospect, when as ‘grandfather’ he enrolled his daughter Bernice’s stepsons Colin Lancelot Rudland and Albert Ivan Rudland in Nailsworth Primary School.[17] Three years earlier, the boys, then aged 11 and 10, had been committed to 12 months in reformatory school, after being caught stealing growing vegetables from Gottlieb Noack’s garden on Goose Island.[18]
Frank died in 1936, aged 63, and Eva Sarah in 1940, aged 59; their place of burial is not known. Their grandson, Harry Eric Rudland, eldest biological son of their daughter Bernice, died whilst serving in WWII (see WWII Personnel).
Frank’s brother Jabez Bunting remained in Gawler, operating as a painter; in 1913 & 1914 the Bunyip featured competing business ads from the brothers. After an extended visit to England in 1929, Jabez passed his business on to his son Harold Bunting, who was still operating it in 1948 (Lionel Folland recalled starting to work for him as a 14 year old). Jabez died in 1939, aged 71, and is buried in the Willaston Cemetery with his wife Minnie.
