Shop & Former Austral Theatre (compiled by Adrian Shackley & Geoff New)

The shop in the front of this site was built in about 1905 by Laycock Bros who operated a furniture and general business and warehouse. Previously the site had been used as part of a blacksmith’s premises.

The two storey hall at the rear was established by Laycocks in 1929-1930 as a silent movie venue (with local accompanying music group) and also as a dance hall and became popular as an entertainment venue at a time of economic depression in Gawler and elsewhere. Many older Gawler residents remember with pleasure events at the theatre. The hall is constructed of local limestone and bricks with a simple corrugated galvanised iron roof.

The era of movie houses commenced in Gawler with showing of films in the Gawler Institute in 1911 and later at the Gawler South Mission Hall. In addition to the Austral Theatre, the much grander Ozone Theatre at 67-73 Murray Street was opened in 1935.
