Herbert Vosper Bassett was the third surviving son of William Bassett (II) and Johanna Louisa Emilie (nee Klaucke), and grandson of Gawler’s original William Bassett (I) and Elizabeth, whose maiden name ‘Vosper’ became Herbert’s middle name. He was born in his parent’s home in Bassett Town (now Gawler South) in 1868 and in 1895 was married there to Florence Ethlinda Ames, the couple went on to have two daughters, Linda and Eileen.
Herbert’s obituary noted he was a genial, community-minded man, who was involved in sporting clubs, the Order of Foresters and was a Councillor for East Ward in 1915 and 1916. Serious illness forced him to retire from his role as councillor and he succumbed in 1918, aged just 50 years old. Both the Town Flag and the Forester’s Lodge Flag were flown at half-mast to acknowledge his passing.
