William John Horace Bassett (III) was born in Bassett Town on 1 July 1863, son of William Bassett (II) and Johanne Louise Emilie nee Klauke, and grandson of Gawler’s original William Bassett (I).
Following his education at St George’s School, he learnt his trade of saddler from second generation Gawler saddler Carl Otto Wachsmuth. He went on to work in Victoria for 11 years before returning to Gawler in 1897 and opening his Murray Street saddlery where he carried out his trade for many years.
W J H Bassett was a member of the Gawler Agricultural Society committee, a prominent Freemason, who served as a Worshipful Master, a Councillor for Gawler’s South Ward from 1905-1907 and from about 1914 he was District Clerk of the Barossa Council, a position he held until his death in 1927, aged 64. He is buried in St George’s Cemetery with his wife Charlotte Emily nee Down (Plots H42 & H43). Her 1934 obituary suggests her passing ‘closes the name of Bassett in Gawler’.
