As well as establishing a large grocer,draper and ironmonger shop in Murray Street, the name James Harris is also associated with St. George's Anglican Church.

He gave service to the church from its early days, and was appointed a Warden of the Church in 1851.In 1897 the Oak Reredos and the Sanctuary Carpet and hangings were presented by Mrs. Harris in memory of her husand. The brass plate affixed to the Reredos bears the words

"To the glory of God and in Memory of the Late JAMES HARRIS for many years Trustee and Warden of this Church. Erected by his widow, Elizabeth Harris, 1897.A.D."

James Harris was elected as Gawler Councillor for East Ward in 1859.
