A HISTORY OF HORSES IN GAWLER

CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION First horses in Australia. Captain Phillip brought 1 stallion, 3 mares and 3 yearlings when he landed in Sydney January 1788. These horses were obtained from the Cape of Good Hope on the journey to Australia. In 1793 more horses were landed. In 1795 a shipment of 29 mares, 3 fillies and 1 stallion arrived, also from the Cape of Good Hope. In 1798, 117 horses in Australia. In 1802 the stallion Washington brought from America. Also in 1802 the stallion Northumberland brought direct from England on the ship “Buffalo”, followed by imports of Arab horses from Persia via India.
