I am still on the Board for the Gawler Gallery, at the moment doing Roster and acting Publicity while Judy is in Europe. My time with the Texplorers sadly ended due to eyesight problems, and for the same reason retired from the Gawler Broadcasting Association. .

I am involved with a Ukelele Group that practices at Hillier Park with the Tapdancing Group there, and was attending a couple of classes at U3A including Creative Writing, Meditation, and currently the Exercise Class. Being 80 now has quietened my lifestyle slightly, but still intend to be involved with as much as possible while I can.

Joanne Beryl Hughes

Born Joanne Beryl, in March, 1939 at Port Pirie, South Australia to Irene (nee Bailey from UK, and Clarence John Secombe, Australian) I was the only daughter, with three brothers.

I lived my early years in Salisbury, attended Salisbury Primary School, then Nailsworth Girls Technical school, where I went to Intermediate Year, studying Commercial subjects as well as Domestic Arts.

I worked at Weapons Research Establishment at Penfield, and Secretary to the Manager of Budgen Jewellers in Adelaide, before my marriage.

In 1957 I married Kenneth William Hughes in the Congregational Church in Salisbury, and lived in that area, apart from 4 years in New Zealand, until we moved to the Gawler district in 1984. We have two sons and one daughter, and seven grandchildren.

Ken’s Chiropractic/Naturopathic Clinic on Adelaide Road was one reason we moved here, but we opted to live in the small neighbouring town of Roseworthy.

During our time here, I attended the old TAFE college doing a Garment Design and Construction Course, and in 2001 went to Para West Adult Campus taking the arts subjects of Textile Art, Mosaic, Sculpture and Painting.

I took an active role in the Gawler branch of Community Aid Abroad where our folk music group Galimaufery played for bush dances as fundraising events. In 1996, I wrote and self-published a book about this group of four musicians, all members of the Baha’i Faith, which told of how we came together, and anecdotes of our musical journeys around Australia.

For 14 years, we were actively involved with the Rotary Show in the Shedley Theatre, Elizabeth, when I was the wardrobe mistress, as well as appearing on stage with the Timestep Tappers.

When Gawler Arts Action group was formed, primarily to find a space for local artists to show their work, I was happy to take part; we set up the Gawler Community Gallery in the Stationmasters House at the Railway Station in 2006. I have been part of the Board of Management at the Gallery, first of all with the portfolio of Publicity Officer, and at present holding the Roster co-ordinator’s position. Last year I was elected Vice President of that committee for the Gallery.

In 2010 we were nominated for the Regional SA Advantage Awards. Because I took on the task of preparing the documentation, I was given the honour of attending the Awards Night Dinner, where The Gallery received a Finalist Award. We are once again entering this prestigious Award for 2015.

Since 1980, I have been involved in public radio, first of all in Salisbury with PBA/fm, being a presenter for many years; and now being a member of the newly formed Gawler Broadcasting Association, which hopes to be ‘on air’ this year 2015.

For four years I was President of the Gawler Quilting Circle helping to organise two of the now famous Textile Art Weekends that bring a lot of visitors to the town. In keeping with the "Fabric Stitching" part of the Quilters, I am now a member of the Gawler textile group, called Texplorers who meet monthly, and hold regular exhibitions in Galleries, in and around the area.

Ken and I have been assisting the Gawler Refugee association, originally set up to care for the overseas refugees arriving in Gawler. Part of our involvement has been in organisation, as well as playing the music for the annual reunion dinner events.

Our contribution to the town of Roseworthy, has been in the roles of Chairman and Secretary of the Roseworthy Neighbourhood Watch Group since 2004.

We have enjoyed the thirty years we have lived, worked and played in the Gawler area.
