German born Johann Wilhelm Kurtz married Johanna Louisa Schiller on 15 July 1865 at Rosenthal Heights, SA (Reg. Barossa 63/85). He farmed at Sheoak Log before moving to 23 Main Street Willaston.
In 1906 he advertised for tenders for the erection of a residence for himself at Willaston, the Specifications and Plan were available at T Graue's Saddlery in Gawler, for prospective builders to view.[1] (Ted Graue was Kurtz's son-in-law). Potentially, the residence being built was the one at 23 Main Street Willaston.
It is suggested that early Lutheran congregations worshipped at J W Kurtz's Willaston residence and that the photo of 23 Main Street Willaston, with a large group out the front [click here to view] was taken on the 50th Golden Anniversary of J W & Mrs Kurtz, which would have occurred in 1915.
Johann died at the Hutchinson Hospital on 2 June 1922 (Reg. Barossa 454/411)[2] and Johanna died on 8 September 1931, they are buried together at Willaston Cemetery (plot 41 N 2).
Their daughter Wilhelmine Louise Clara Kurtz (b. 1878) married Theodor Graue in 1900.
