NICHOLLS Rosemary Dianne Lewis [nee Walker] 07/01/1941 – 30/12/2012
When Rosemary, [then Rosemary Hudson], a young widow, arrived in Gawler over 25 years ago, she attended St Georges Anglican Church, and instantly formed friendships with many of the parishioners. She was a ray of sunshine to all of us.
Friendship was one of Rosemary’s many spiritual gifts. This was closely followed by the gift of hospitality. Many of us enjoyed sumptuous meals at Rosemary’s home. Sumptuous was perhaps an understatement. As we sat around the table, we enjoyed lively conversation and we ate and drank until almost bursting. When we left the house, we would leave with bowls of food that hadn’t been consumed.
Another of Rosemary’s gifts was living life abundantly. She never did things by half. Whatever she was involved in; either at work, in the community, or at home, we could rely on her to give abundantly.
Another of her gifts was music. She shared her talents as a teacher and with church groups. Her beautiful voice and guitar skills were enjoyed by many over the years.
Rosemary also had literary gifts, which many of us have enjoyed in letters and in cards, but, in recent years, it has been wonderful to see her using her literary and spiritual gifts in the forms of essays for study and homilies, at church. As a friend, we have marvelled at her writings and I am sorry that we couldn’t have been present to hear some of her homilies.
Rosemary was a very unselfish person and was always cheerful, even when in pain. We have many beautiful memories. Her marriage to Bob Nicholls around 18 years ago was such a joyous time and we were delighted to see them both settling into and being involved in the Port Vincent community so quickly.
There is one recollection which we laugh over and that is when Bob and Brian went to the pub, Rosemary and Bev decided to have some red wine. Rose had a few sips and didn’t like it and she tipped the majority of the contents down the sink. When Bob got home he asked the whereabouts of the expensive Rockford Basket Press wine, and the girls hooted with laughter as Bob picked up the empty bottle.
Rosemary was a generous and gifted lady who inspired many. We are so pleased to have known her and she will remain in our hearts.
Eulogy Compiled by Bev Thom for Rosemary’s Funeral Service at St. Neot’s Anglican Church, Port Vincent on Friday 4th January 2013. Rosemary was interred at the St Georges Anglican Cemetery Gawler on 07/01/2013.
