The Primitive Methodist Chapel opened on Sunday 20th August 1865; the event was reported by the Bunyip (26 Aug 1865) "New PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHAPEL —The new Primitive Methodist Chapel, near the Victoria Mills, was opened on Sunday last, when services were preached by the Rev. Mr. Dean to full congregations. The opening services will be continued tomorrow and Monday next. Great credit is due to this body of Christians, considering their number in the neighbourhood, for the neat little place of worship they have erected in Gawler."[1]

In April 1866 it was the site of a Temperance Meeting, with James Mold in the Chair, "he stated that a Temperance Society has once existed in Gawler but had lapsed. Another formed at that meeting." [2] The Bunyip (7 Apr 1866) reported on that meeting.[3]

In 1899, this chapel was the meeting place of Lutheran families, who previously worshipped in the Kurtz home in Willaston [corner Paxton Street East and Main Street] and in 1908 this group formed a congregation called the Zion Lutheran Church. In 1909, the Zion Lutherans purchased the chapel, which they referred to as "Little Glory".[4] After the Zion Lutheran Church was built across the road in 1922, the Lutheran School was opened in this building in 1928, Mr H. McKenzie was the sole teacher. In 1941, the school closed but a Saturday School was held here until 1953 when the chapel was sold, demolished, and a residence built on the site (contemporary address 18 Finniss Street).
