1866. The first record of Primitive Methodist Church in the “Chronological” pages of the “History of Gawler 1837 – 1908 by E. H. Coombe M.P”, is on page 381 - “April 6 1866 – Temperance meeting in Primitive Methodist Church. Mr. Jas. Mold in the chair. He stated that a Temperance Society has once existed in Gawler but had lapsed. Another formed at that meeting.” In 1899, this Church was the meeting place of Lutheran families [who previously worshipped in the Kurtz home in Willaston - cnr Paxton Street East and Main Street] and in 1908 this congregation formed a congregation called the Zion Lutheran Church. In 1909, Zion Lutherans purchased this Church. After the Zion Lutheran Church was built across the road in 1922, the Lutheran School was opened in this building in 1928. [Mr H. McKenzie was the sole teacher.] In 1941, the School closed but the Saturday School was held here until 1953 when the Church was sold, demolished, and a residence built on that site. We sincerely thank Marion Zerk for sharing this gem with us.

Evidently, prior to 1899, Lutheran families worshipped in the Kurtz home in Willaston [cnr Paxton Street East]. In 1908 those Lutherans formed a congregation called Zion Lutheran Church and in 1909 they purchased the Little Glory Church to worship there. In 1928 the Lutheran School was opened in the Little Glory church building and Mr H. McKenzie was the sole teacher.
