The Zion Lutheran Church is located on Finniss Street (allotment 104 on the original Gawler Town Plan) and accessed via Cowan Street.
On 26 June 1921, the growing Zion Lutheran Congregation, who had been worshipping in the "Little Glory Church" (former Primitive Methodist Chapel), decided to build a new, larger church on the garden block behind the Lutheran Manse "Hylands". "The foundation stone for the new church was laid on 30 October 1921. Construction progressed quickly and the building known as the Zion Lutheran Church was completed for its dedication on 9 April 1922. The day of dedication included a morning Service in the German language with people inside and outside of the church, a luncheon in buildings at the nearby Gawler Oval, and an afternoon Service in English with participants outside of the building. About 1,500 people attended."[1]
The large stained glass window was installed in 1947, on the 25th Anniversary of the Church's construction and a balcony to increase the seating capacity was added in 1964. Membership reached 500 in 1967.
The Zion Lutheran Church and Immanuel Lutheran Church congregations amalgamated in 2016 to form the Gawler Lutheran Church, and at that time both worship centres continued to be used. However, social distancing restrictions due to Covid, circa 2020 meant the Immanuel Lutheran Church was the more suitable option.
