Grayden served in the Australian Army in WWII, in the 1st Australian Pack Transport Company in New Guinea (Kokoda). Whilst serving he married fellow local, Melva Charlotte Mackereth, who was also serving (click here to read about Melva and her service in the top secret Australian Special Wireless Group). After the war, the couple made their life on the family farm, raising 3 sons; Thomas, Robin Grayden and Vernon.

Like his father, Grayden was a keen horseman and was heavily involved in the Gawler Show; including showing his own ponies, serving on the committee and taking over from his father as horse convenor, a role he held for 25 years. An article in the Bunyip in 1998, describes him as "A Show Stalwart for 65 years!"[1]. Due to his service, he was bestowed life membership in the Gawler Agricultural, Horticultural and Floricultural Society Inc in 1981.

He was also a member of the Gawler Probus Club, serving for over 20 years.[2]

Grayden and Melva sold the farm around 1980 and retired to Gawler. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in 2004 and welcomed many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
