Martin Henry Richter was born at Reeves Plains in 1886 to farmer Martin Richter and Johanna nee Palm. Like his father, he went on to farm at Reeves Plains. In 1915 he married 'Jo' (Viley Catherine Lucina nee Mortimer) and they had two daughters and one son. Son Grayden Richter also went on to farm the family property at Reeves Plains with his father (they operated as 'M H & G Richter').
Both Martin & Jo's son Grayden and youngest daughter Joan served in WWII. Joan Richter enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service in April 1942, when she was just 18 years old. She served as Lance Bombardier (SF64864) in 58 Anti-Aircraft Searchlight Battery in Western Australia, operating searchlight systems to scan the sky for enemy aircraft. Whilst stationed in WA she regularly met up with fellow Gawler local and future sister-in-law Melva Mackereth, who was also serving in WA (click here to read about Melva and her top secret role in WWII).
Martin was actively involved with the Gawler Show, holding the role of President of the Gawler Agricultural, Horticultural and Floricultural Society Inc from 1951-1958, and horse convenor for many years (a role his son Grayden later took on). Due to his service to the Show Society, Martin was bestowed life membership of the Gawler Show in 1963.
He was also heavily involved with Coursing and Trotting; acting as the Reeves Plains Coursing Club Secretary for 43 years, judging trotting races for 18 years and acting as the "man in the box" at seven country trotting tracks, including Gawler.[1] In his younger years, he was the top man in the Reeves Plains Tennis Team for 15 years.[1]
Martin Henry Richter passed away in 1966, aged 80. He and wife 'Jo' are commemorated on a memorial plaque on their son Grayden's grave at St George's Cemetery.
