Neville and Judith met on a youth group bus trip to Toowoomba in Queensland and married in the Zion Lutheran Church in Gawler on May 5th, 1962.

Neville and Judith Spencer started their mechanical business under the name of N.M.Spencer Service Centre alongside their home at 36 Davies Street, Willaston in February, 1968.

They worked hard and long hours in the early days. Neville often started work at 5am, work all day and after the evening meal, returned to work until 9pm.

They got their parts from Adelaide by passenger rail to Gawler, which necessitated a drive to Gawler Railway Station each day. It was much easier then to navigate around Gawler.[ One could even stop ones car while Teddy Allwood did a U-Turn at the Murray Street/Lyndoch Road junction].

Judith assisted greatly by picking up parts and cars, towing cars, helping bleed brakes, lift gearboxes, paying the accounts, doing the bookwork, and anything that needed an extra pair of hands.

It was a very busy life running the business and raising 4 children. Each year they went for their caravanning holiday with the children. They apprenticed their sons John and David; both working in the business for some years and this eased Judith’s workload.

1969 prices were:

Fit a reconditioned short motor $192.75; Fit a head-gasket to a diesel motor $21.16; Valve-grind $22.34; Rings, valves and bearings fitted $30.57; and Overhaul tractor rear-end, including Crown and Pinion $174.47. Those were the days!

The business was good and they made lots of friends over the years. After 42 ½ years they decided to retire and enjoy life at a slower pace.
