Robin Mervyn Tiller Born 1941: Adelaide Hospital Brothers Lionel Rodney (1935- 2018), Lance William Harold ( 2019) Parents: Mervyn and Audrey

Robin Tiller was born in the Adelaide Hospital. He lived for a short time in Kapunda. While his family moved to Hamley Bridge and then Gawler, Robin lived with his Aunty and Uncle, Dot and Ken Wall Who ran the Top Shop in Gawler.

The Tiller family first settled on 14th Street before buying 11 Twelve Street. Robin and his brothers attended Gawler Primary School.

In 1953, the Bunyip newspaper incorrectly reported that Rodney Tiller was severely burnt by firecrackers, when in fact it was Robin Tiller who received the injuries. The incident happened at the Gawler Railway Station when a lit firework was placed in Robins pockets and exploded his own fireworks, severely burning Robins backside, back and legs. Because of this injury, Robin did not compete in sporting events.

SEVERELY BURNT BY FIREWORKS IN POCKET

Rodney Tiller, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. E. ML Tiller, of Gawler West, was admitted to the Hutchinson Hospital last; Friday evening after being severely burnt by fireworks. He had a pocketful of Chinese crackers which caught alight and exploded when a lighted cracker was thrown into his pocket. His trousers started to burn and a young companion helped pull them off.

Rodney was taken into the porter's kitchen in the railway station yards — the mishap had occurred in Railway Terrace. He is still a patient in hospital, and is reported to be progressing satisfactorily. 1

Robin worked in a local bakery from the age of 14 for nine years. He then worked with his brothers for three years at Tiller Brothers Painting, before spending three years at Roseworthy College at the World Wide Camp. Robin then spent 25 years working at the Weapons Research Facility at Edinburgh.

Robin married Yvonne at the age of 25 in 1969. They had four children; Kerry, Robert, Melissa and Mark. Later, Robin and Yvonne divorced.

Robin is now retired and lives in Evanston.
