Lance William Harold Tiller was born in Hamley Bridge on November 14, 1938.
The Tiller family moved to Gawler in the early 1940s, living firstly on 14th Street, before Edward, Lance's father, purchased No.11 Twelth Street.
Lance attended Gawler Primary School and Gawler High School.
In the 1960s Lance and his brother Rodney operated Gawler Business, ‘Tiller Brothers’ which was a painting and decorating service in the Gawler Region. Lance was also an active member of the Gawler St John Ambulance Service, driving the local ambulances from his early 20s. It was here he met his future wife, Brenda Hancock. Lance and Brenda lived together on Deane Street, Gawler West. Together they had one child, Alison. Brenda and Lance later divorced.
Lance’s proudest achievement in life was riding his penny-farthing pushbike in the John Martins Christmas Pageant. His bike was bought from Mallala local, Jack Temby (the bike is now on display in the Mallala Museum). Lance used to tell the story that, when he applied to ride in the pageant in 1959, John Martins sent out Sir Edward Hayward to Gawler to assess his skills. Sir Hayward according to Lance, asked him to ride the bike up and down Murray Street in the traffic. If he could so without falling off or causing any major nuisance, he would have the job.
Lance rode in the Christmas Pageants from 1959 until 2008, a total of 49 years. He retired after a person dressed as a wolf sprang out of the crowd and pushed him off his bike, causing him injury, and forcing him to walk the rest of the 2009 pageant route.
Lance passed away at the age of 80 at the Lyell McEwin Hospital, in 2019.
