George Gozzard arrived in South Australia aboard the ship "Duchess of Northumberland" in 1839, with his second wife nee Charlotte Pell Battams and daughter by his first marriage Rosanna Gozzard.[1] The family proceeded to Galwer in the 1840s.[1]
George took over the duties of Gawler Postmaster, following the death of Henry Calton (who had run the service from his Old Spot Hotel). George combined the duties of Postmaster with those of baker in Walker Place[1], he was assisted by newly arrived Philip Cheek from 1854 for about 2 years.[2]
He was one of the original Trustees of the Gawler Wesleyan Church, which was built in 1850.
George died on 21 June 1863, aged 61, and was buried in Gawler Cemetery.[1]
