Born 1st July 1943 with twin brother Donald, sons of 'Jock' Robert Alastair Macalister and nee Madge Edna Caldicott. Robert and Donald were educated at Gawler Blocks Primary School and travelled to Adelaide daily to attend Urrbrae Agricultural High School for 2 years; after which Robert attended Gawler High School, where he was installed as a Prefect in 1960.
Robert worked all his working life with Donald and their parents on their poultry farm off Hillier Road.
Robert and Donald’s father Jock was actively involved within the hierarchy of the SA Poultry industry and Jock and his wife Madge lived at the poultry farm most of their married life. Jock was on the Gawler Anglican Parish Council as their Transfiguration Church representative.
Robert and Donald loved improving their go-cart and driving their Holden Ute (lowered and with its distinctive Lukey mufflers – one could hear them coming from far away).
Robert was a member of the choir of the Church of the Transfiguration and after age 18, joined the Gawler Apex Club; becoming President in 1975-76. He was awarded Life Member of the Gawler Apex Club in 1983.
He married Delma Curnow [born 4th March 1946 to Jack and Mavis Curnow, of Aero Motors] and after his marriage, Robert eventually lived in the house next door to Jock and Madge. Robert and Delma had a daughter Belinda [Lindy], and a son Robert [Robby].
During the 60’s to 80’s Robert and Delma always enjoyed going to the many and various Balls in the Gawler Institute and the many Apex social functions; both actively working for the Apex Club, especially giving many hours of assistance to me in the successful organisation of the Gawler Apex Club careers nights to assist in the future planning for many Gawler High School students.
Delma passed away on 18th June 2011 and Robert was deeply affected by her passing.
Robert died on 17th March 2017 and is buried with Delma at the St Georges Anglican Cemetery on Cheek Avenue, Gawler East.
