Second of Four Generations of Gawler Butchers

Hartley Burfield Miller was born in Mitcham, South Australia on the 15 Jun 1866, son of William Miller and nee Ruth Burfield. The family were residing in Gawler from at least the 1880s, when William was running a butcher shop from the Piles Building in Murray Street.

On 25 June 1890, Hartley married Sarah Ada Hine, at her father Thomas Hine's residence in Willaston, Reverend Walter Jones officiated.[1] The couple went on to have 10 children (see details below), babies 'Willy' and Hilda died during infancy and were buried at Willaston Cemetery.

Hartley followed his father into the butchering trade, the second of four generations of Miller family butchers in the Gawler area. In 1896 he purchased the store at 38a Adelaide Road, Gawler South and it passed to his son Clifford Hartley Miller, butcher, upon Harley's death in 1941.

Hartley's son Arthur Henry Miller was also a butcher at Gawler South, and his son "Snowy" Graham Hartley Miller was the family's fourth generation of butchers.

Hartley and Sarah eventually left Gawler for the metro area, but upon their deaths in 1941 and 1935, respectively, their remains were returned to Willaston Cemetery to be buried with their infant children (plot 16 C 4).

To the east of Mount Terrace, one of the streets in the more recently developed area is named "Millers Road".

Properties of Miller Family

In addition to the shop at 38a Adelaide Road, records show Hartley briefly, from 18 Sep 1936 to 27 Jan 1937, owned Bassett Town allotments 67 & 68 and part of allotment 66, which includes the site of the former Ram's Head Hotel.[2]

His wife Sarah, owned row cottages at 4 & 6 Twelfth Street, from April 1910 until August 1920. The cottages were probably tenanted out.

The family's residence has not yet been determined.
