Humans of Gawler - Allen Tiller - The Haunts of Adelaide
“Some people suffer from resting bitch face, me, I suffer from resting grumpy face. I might look eternally annoyed, but if you see me around Gawler, say hello, you might be pleasantly surprised!” Allen was born in Gawler at the Hutchinson Hospital and was educated at Evanston Primary School and Gawler High School. Later he worked for Gawler Icons, Sutch Carpets and in his 20s he moved to Queensland to work for Southcorp Wines, then Linfox, returning to SA in the mid-2000s. He used to play as a kid at Dead Man's Pass, sailing little homemade boats along the creek and catching tadpoles - you can’t really do either today. He also used to play in the Jeff Bros Golden Crust Warehouse, on the corner of 18th and 23rd Streets which are now townhouses. "My mates and I used to go to the Mobile at Evanston, as it was the only 24-hour servo, there was no Gawler Green, no Evanston homemaker centre, no roundabouts, and the only traffic lights were the crossing at the servo - they also did an awesome gorilla dog!" In 2007 Allen founded a paranormal investigation team called Eidolon Paranormal, then in 2009 SA Paranormal. In 2012 he founded The Haunts of Adelaide, which spawned a book of the same name. In 2013, Allen starred in the television show Haunting: Australia, which was viewed by an international audience. Since then, Allen has twice been a Historian in Residence at the Adelaide City Libraries, writing two free self-guided ghost tours and a book of poetry and short stories. Allen works at the Gawler Library Service, and studies online at the University of Tasmania, working towards a B.A. in History, to further his knowledge on preserving local history, which is his passion. Allen’s father and grandfather both worked at the Gawler Railway Station, which Allen grew up near, living in the house his dad designed and built himself on Twenty-first Street. Allen’s uncle, Lance, was famous for being the penny-farthing rider for almost 50 years in the Adelaide Christmas Pageant.
