Twentythird Street is the site of the Gawler Railway Station, it was initially known as Station Terrace and can be seen on the original 1857 Bassett Town Plan. As land was released to the south of the original allotments, that section of the street was named Coulls Street in honour of William Green Coulls, who was the assistant engineer of the Adelaide to Gawler Railway.

The street has buildings contained on the Town of Gawler's State, Local and Contributory Heritage lists, including the house at 1 Twentythird Street, the stone store building at 2 Twentythird Street which has been the long time premises Sanders Bros Grain and Fodder, and the stone railway station goods shed at Lot 20 Twentythird Street, which is set back from Twentythird street, partially behind 2 Twentythird Street and is the premises for the Station Gymnasium (about 2014 - 2025 ongoing). The opposite end of the street was the site where the May Bros Foundry operated from 1885, covering parts of Eighteenth Street, Nineteenth Street and the section of Twentythird Street between them (see the line diagram and photograph in the Twentythird Street album). The stone building at 25 Twentythird Street that was part of May Bros Foundry, was later used as Jeffs Bros Flour Mill (with silos in the adjacent blocks 17-23 Twentythird Street) and then converted to private residences in the 1990s. Heritage-style terrace houses were built in the the blocks where the silos used to stand (17-23 Twentythird Street and adjoining 27 Nineteenth Street).
