Eighteenth Street was originally known as Blanch Street or Blanch Terrace. Historically it formed the boundary between Gawler West to the north and Bassett Town to the south and can be seen on the original Plan for the Township of Bassett. It is now part of the suburb of Gawler South.
The Terminus Hotel opened at the western end of the street, adjacent to the Gawler Railway Station, in 1857. It has operated under numerous names over the years and was known as the Overway Hotel (27 Eighteenth Street) prior to closure in the 2019.
At its peak, the May Brothers and Co Limited Foundry, which ran from 1885-1924, occupied large portions on both sides of Eighteenth Street (encompassing Lots 8-14 - note lot numbers do not correspond with street numbers) and sections of adjoining Nineteenth and Twentythird Streets, as depicted in this line drawing. The stone building located at 12 Eighteenth Street was an office for the Foundry and is now a private residence. The heritage-style row cottages at 14-28 Eighteenth Street were built in 1993 on part of the former May Bros site.
A General Store operated at 19 Eighteenth Street, initially by Humphry’s and later Whinnen’s; it is now a private residence.
Eight other Eighteenth Street residences were also listed as “Contributory Items” in the Town of Gawler Development Plan. The one at 1 Eighteenth Street, was extensively renovated and extended in 2024, opening as Signature Orthodontics in September 2024.
