Mr Eric Noack was very well known for his Flower Wagon on Adelaide Road and his gardens on Goose Island.
He was born ‘Eric Daniel Noack’, in Tanunda on 13th December 1920, youngest son of gardener Gottlieb Daniel Noack and his wife, nee Elizabeth Dorothea Hoopmann. Eric’s siblings included Frieda Noack. From 1923, the family resided in the large bungalow at 1 Adelaide Road, on the northern side of the road next to the Mill Inn Bridge and had a commercial garden on Goose Island. It was from this garden in 1925, that local boys Colin Rudland and Albert Rudland, aged just 11 & 10 (stepsons of Beatrice Rudland nee Bunting), were caught stealing growing vegetables and committed to 12 months reformatory school![1]
In 1940, the family’s garden was the site of a garden fete to raise funds for the Gawler Red Cross, “all who attended felt rewarded in having the pleasure of looking over such a delightful garden.”[2] Given the era, the funds raised likely went towards the war effort, and in November 1944, Eric enlisted and served as a Private in the Australian Army (see WWII Personnel). After returning from war, he married Beth Bywaters, second daughter of Cr. Edward James Bywaters, in the ‘prettily decorated’ Church of Christ, right next door to the Noack family home.[3] The “reception was held in the Gawler South Hall, where 150 guests sat down to a delicious home made wedding breakfast.”[3]
By 1951, Eric had taken on responsibility for the family’s Goose Island garden, when the South Para flooded covering most of the garden, including about 3,000 poppies, 4,000 gladioli and 9,000 stocks.[4] Thankfully, he reported the damage was slight, other than a few gladioli bulbs which were washed out.[4] The flooding of the Goose Island garden had been an ongoing issue; Eric’s father Gottlieb, got permission from council to blow up the concrete weir in about 1930, as the 1916 floods had cut a channel around it which resulted in continued flooding of the garden. Another major flood event occurred in August 1971; there is a photo of Eric Noack’s Goose Island garden covered in water. It was around this time, that Eric was proposing that part of Goose Island should be dug out to create an ornamental dam (see newspaper article); the idea was not taken up by council.
Another major event for Eric’s florist business was the supply of flowers for the Queen’s visit in 1954. He supplied nine truckloads, including 160 dozen gladioli, plus dahlias, asters, zinnias, delphiniums, carnations, gerberas and greenery, valued at about £200, to decorate the luncheon rooms at the Morphettville Racecourse![5] It was around this time he started trading as ‘Para Florists’ (Click here to see some examples of his advertisements from the Bunyip in the 1950s). As part of his business, he went on to open the ‘Flower Wagon’ retail outlet out the front of his Adelaide Road home. A photo from the Gawler History Team collection shows it was still in running in 2003, but it is not known if Eric was still involved at that point (he would have been in his 80s).
Eric Noack passed away on the 8th October 2010, aged 89. He is buried in the Willaston Cemetery, his memorial plaque notes him to be husband of Margaret, father of 6 and grandpa of 12.
